우리나라 최초의 순교자 윤지충(바오로)과 권상연(야고보)은 나무 위폐를 불태우고 제사를 지내지 않는다는 이유로 1791년 풍남문 밖 형장에서 참수되고 그 머리는 성벽에 매달려졌다.
그 후 100여년이 지나 전주 부성이 헐려질 무렵 초대 주임신부 프랑스인 보두네 신부는 유서 깊은 바로 이 곳 순교 터에 순교자들의 선혈이 어린 성벽의 돌을 주춧돌 삼고 피 묻은 흙으로 벽돌을 구워 성당을 세웠으니 전동성당은 한국 천주교회의 중요한 성지의 하나이다.
The first Korean martyrs Yun Ji-chung (Paul) and Gwon Sang-yeon (Jacob) were beheaded and their heads were hung on the walls in 1791 because they burned wooden mortuary tablets and did not hold the memorial ceremonies for their ancestors.
More than a hundred years after this incident, when the Jeonju Wall was demolished, the first French priest Beaudounet constructed the Jeondong Cathedral on the execution ground. He used the bloody stones of the wall where their heads were hung as cornerstones and baked bricks with the bloody dirt. Thus, Jeondong Cathedral is one of the most important sacred places of Korean Catholic Church. |
