In an ancient time, Jeonju was the land of Mahan, and it belonged to Backje during the Three Kingdoms Period and Wansanju was set up by Baekje for the first time in 555. After the unification by Shilla, Wansanju was renamed as Jeonju in 757 (in the 16th year of King Gyeongdeok's reign) and Jeonju has been developed as a city having approximately 1500 years of history and embracing our ancestors' breath till now.
Jeonju is the land where Gyeonhuieon, a powerful family based in Sangju, once founded Hubaekje in 900 and dreamt of a new country, and the birthplace of the Joseon Dynasty where its own culture bloomed on the Korean Peninsula for five hundred years. Thus, Jeonju is the very place where the solid Korean traditional culture such as hanok, hansik, hanji, etc. has been lodging. |
