Gyeonggijeon is the place where the portrait of Lee, Seong-gye, the founder of Joseon Dynasty, was enshrined in 1414 (the 14th year of King Taejong's reign) in order to solidify the foundation of Joseon Dynasty in early Joseon. The portraits of Taejo were enshrined in several places such as Gaeseong, Yeongheung, Jeonju, Gyeongju, and Pyeongyang, but all the portraits were burnt during Imjinwaeran (Japanese invasion between 1592 and 1598). The only exception is the one enshrined in Jeonju, which has been preserved until today.
Gyeonggijeon is located next to the Hanok Village and is the starting point of the village tour as well as the finishing point where tourists can take a rest. During the summer when cicadas are chirping loudly, senior citizens of the village play chess in groups here and there under the cool shadowy trees. In the fall, it is a great place for people to enjoy dates when the ginkgo leaves turn yellow. |
