Main buildings in Gyeonggijeon have gambrel roofs ( -shaped roof) and stand in a straight line from the main gate, and in the center, there is Jeongjeon in which the portrait of Taejo Lee Seong-gye is enshrined. Looking at the antique buildings standing symmetrically along the passage of grey stones, we can feel the authoritative order of the royal household.
When Imjinwaeran broke, Oh Hee-gil, an official of Gyeonggijeon, moved the portrait to a cave in Naejang-san in Jeongeup City, Ganghwa Island, and to Myohyang-san to protect it with the help of Son Honglok and Ahn Eui, classical scholars. The portrait was relocated to Jeoksang-san in Muju during the Second Manchu Invasion in 1636, to Jeonju Hyanggyo in 1767, and to Wibong Fortress in Wanju when Donghak peasants entered Jeonju to flee for safety. Having survived many dangers, the portrait of King Taejo is enshrined here in Gyeonggijeon. |
